The Wisconsin Dells

Last year, Lee and I had considered visiting the Wisconsin Dells, but decided they were a bit out of the way.  We were farther north, headed for Minneapolis.  So we decided to stop this year, after visiting Lee's cousins in Illinois.

I had never heard of the Dells until a year ago, so wasn't sure what to expect.  Lee told me about all the water parks and theme parks, but I was more interested in the natural beauty of the place.  So yesterday we took a boat trip through the Upper Dells and enjoyed the scenery.  The Dells were created towards the end of the last ice age.  As the glaciers receded, a huge ice dam north of the Dells burst, and the waters that rushed forth carved the rock formations of the Dells in a matter of weeks.  The geology here is of primarily sandstone, so it is soft and easily eroded.  In 1909 a dam was built on the river, and the water rose 12 to 15 feet.  Below are iPhone photos of the formations we saw:

We are here over the Labor Day weekend, so it is crowded.  It's nice to see so many families enjoying nature and the great outdoors.  There are boats, swimmers, and picnickers everywhere!
